Women have so many demands on their time. Often they’re too busy, too tired and too focused on others to take care of their own health. But that thinking needs to change. Heart disease is the #1 killer of American women today, more than breast and lung cancers combined. Recognizing the symptoms and risks, making lifestyle changes and getting timely care can mean the difference between life and death.
The first step is to schedule your heart screening. We’re sensitive to a woman’s busy schedule and will conveniently set an appointment around the busy calendar of today’s women.
Are you at risk?
To determine personal risk, heart screenings are recommended for women over age 25. Cardiology Associates of North Mississippi offers four levels of screening for cardiovascular disease.
Face the Facts
- Approximately 500,000 women die from cardiovascular disease a year and 63% have no previous symptoms.
- Heart disease or stroke will end the lives of one in three women in the United States, while one in 25 will die from breast cancer.
- Heart disease kills more women in their 20s, 30s and 40s than breast cancer.
- Women have a 47% probability of developing some form of cardiovascular disease and a 36% chance of dying from the disease.
- Heart disease affects one in nine women over age 45.
- More women than men die of heart disease.
- Women are much more likely to die after a heart attack, 44% of women and 26% of men within one year.
- Despite the alarming statistics, it’s estimated that just 8% of women consider heart disease their greatest health risk.
Level I: Self-Risk Assessment Survey
We recommend that all women over age 25 complete the Self-Risk Assessment Survey to identify their risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Just visit or call our office at 1-866-620-6800 to request your free Self-Risk Assessment Survey. “At-Risk” women are strongly encouraged to consider Level II Heart Risk Screening.
Level II: Heart Risk Screening
This screening is recommended for women over the age 25 who want to determine more precisely their risk for cardiovascular disease and for women who already know that they are at risk for cardiovascular disease.
This screening includes:
- Tests to determine total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides and glucose levels
- Measurement of blood pressure and heart rate
- Measurement of height, weight, waist circumference and body mass index
- Measurement of percent body fat
- Measurement of Small and Large Vessel Arterial Elasticity (CV Profilor®)
- Early detection of arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) caused by environmental or genetic factors
- Review of heart disease in family history
- Review of tobacco use history
- Computerized assessment of risk for cardiac event within the next 10 years
- Consultation to review risk profile and answer questions
- Educational resources provided for recommended lifestyle modification
- Referrals provided for nutrition and/or fitness counseling, tobacco cessation, support groups and medical/cardiology consultation
Level III: Heart Risk Screening PLUS
This screening is recommended for women who are known to be at moderate to high risk for cardiovascular disease, or for those who prefer to have a more complete or follow-up assessment.
This screening includes:
- Repeat CV Profilor®and follow up testing for women to assess the impact of risk factor modification and medical therapies
- Consultation to review the CV Profilor® results and discuss a personal plan for risk reduction, further diagnostics and/or treatment
or
- Electron Beam CT scan of Heart with Calcium Score Calculation – Recommended for asymptomatic women with more than two cardiac risk factors or abnormal large vessel arterial elasticity
- Consultation to review the Calcium Score and discuss a personal plan for risk reduction, further diagnostics and/or treatment
Level IV: Full Cardiology Consultation
The Full Cardiology Consultation was created for women with symptoms that suggest cardiovascular disease and for women with known cardiovascular disease.
